Big Idea for Content Area:


To compare and contrast diseases, health conditions and health care that is prevalent in adolescents and adults including cancer, obesity, etc. in African Americans.

To discuss the importance of early detection of diseases, health conditions and health care that affects the African American community.

To develop the health skills needed to empower learners to assume lifelong concepts to maintain and support a healthy, active lifestyle.

Essential Question for Content Area:


To what extent can we keep ourselves free of hereditary and non-hereditary diseases?

Why are some diseases more prominent in the African-American culture?

Why are health disparities between African Americans and other racial groups more apparent in life expectancy, infant mortality and other measures of health status?

An individual’s health at different life stages is dependent on heredity, environmental factors and lifestyle choices.

Current and emerging diagnostic, prevention and treatment strategies can help people live healthier and longer lives.

How are health issues and health care in a diverse society reflected within a culture, gender group, ethnicity, educational background, beliefs, lifestyle, faith, profession, and geography?
What are the survival rates of African Americans as compared to other ethnic groups in health disparities?
What are the percentages of African Americans affected state by state?

CONTENT
Factors contributing to poor health among African Americans include discrimination, cultural barriers, and lack of access to health care.

I think African Americans have a low life expectancy rate because of the foods we eat. We eat very unhealthy foods that are rich in fat.

I think the factor that contributes to poor health care is cultural barriers. A lot of African Americans do not have the income to pay for the best health care so they do not get the best health care available.

I believe the factor that contributes to poor health among African Americans is discrimination. I believe it is because of the color of our skin and the way we approach things. We don't always speak up for ourselves.

A factor that contributes to poor health care among African-Americans is the lack of access to health care. Many African Americans can't afford health care. You are just given any doctor who don't want to help you with your health issue.

A factor that contributes to poor health care among African-Americans is the lack of access to health care. Some people do not have enough money to get the better doctors or go to the best hospitals. They live off a limited amount of money and have to take care of their families. Sometimes they cannot afford good health care.

Yes because people of different races could go to a doctor or hospital and get the same treatment as everyone else without any problems or attitude from the doctor or nurse.

Yes, There is equal heath care in society for all ethnic groups. Black people have the same equal rights as white people and so do spanish people or any other group of people. That's why I think all ethnic groups get equal health care in society.

Yes, I think all ethnic groups get equal health care. If a black person or a white person get sick and they go to the hospital to get treated and it's a bad problem they do their best to care for that person. No matter what the race they get equal health care.

It relates to me because I like being a leader and not a follower. I always try to be myself. I like being an outsider and different. That's why I can relate to diveristy.

It relates to me because I like to be different from other people. I like to have different clothes and different sneakers. I like to have my own style. That is being diverse from other poeple, trends and styles.

Diversity means to be different in some way. You can be different in the things you like to do, the things you like to eat or clothes you like to wear. For example some people like to talk on the phone while others like to text. I can relate to the word diversity because I think I am different. I like to be my own person.
