Big Idea for Content Area:


To compare and contrast diseases, health conditions and health care that is prevalent in adolescents and adults including cancer, obesity, etc. in African Americans.

To discuss the importance of early detection of diseases, health conditions and health care that affects the African American community.

To develop the health skills needed to empower learners to assume lifelong concepts to maintain and support a healthy, active lifestyle.

Essential Question for Content Area:


To what extent can we keep ourselves free of hereditary and non-hereditary diseases?

Why are some diseases more prominent in the African-American culture?

Why are health disparities between African Americans and other racial groups more apparent in life expectancy, infant mortality and other measures of health status?

An individual’s health at different life stages is dependent on heredity, environmental factors and lifestyle choices.

Current and emerging diagnostic, prevention and treatment strategies can help people live healthier and longer lives.

Learner will have enhanced knowledge to communicate how research has shown that unhealthy choices can have a variety of harmful effects on the human body.

How are health issues and health care in a diverse society reflected within a culture, gender group, ethnicity, educational background, beliefs, lifestyle, faith, profession, and geography?
What are the survival rates of African Americans as compared to other ethnic groups in health disparities?
What are the percentages of African Americans affected state by state?

CONTENT
Factors contributing to poor health among African Americans include discrimination, cultural barriers, and lack of access to health care.

SKILLS
Grade 8 CPI 4 and 8 Standard: 2.2
All students will use health- enhancing personal, interpersonal, and life skills to support a healthy, active lifestyle as related to health issues and health care.

I think Africans Americans life expectancy is lower then other ethnic groups because African Americans catch a lot of diseases from not taking care of themselves. They become ill, they can't fucntion right and die at an early age.
